Get to Know... Andrew Huff

One of my favorite parts of board building is watching the reclaimed lumber take shape. Starting with something that is often times over 100 years old and forming it into a board that is going to be appreciated for a lifetime is a gratifying feeling. Most of the wood I work with is at the end of its life and it's an incredible experience being able to breathe new life into it.

One of a Kind: Describe your work.
Andrew: I make real wood inlayed longboards, paddle boards, and wakesurf boards. I use a combination of different woods to create my designs. I specialize in reclaimed and recycled lumber which means each board is different and unique. My boards are functional pieces of art. They ride and perform just as good as they look.
One of a Kind: When and why did you decide to become an artist?
Andrew: I've been building boards for over 6 years. I've always had a passion for the boarding industry. I absolutely love being on a board. I've grown to love woodworking just as much as I love riding. One of the main reasons I became an artist was to show people what a board could look and feel like. I also really love to push the idea of traditional woodworking.

One of a Kind: What are you bringing to the Spring Show?
Andrew: I'll have stand up paddle boards, longboards and wakesurfs.
One of a Kind: What are some of your favorite things to do in Chicago?
Andrew: Chicago is a great place to enjoy the natural art and the man made art as well. Walking through Millennium Park is a great way to spend a day.
One of a Kind: What is your favorite restaurant in Chicago?
Andrew: There's only one place to get a good deep dish pizza, and that's in Chicago at Giordano's.
One of a Kind: Have you ever made anything that you couldn't part with?
Andrew: Yes, the first board I've ever built. I've had many offers to buy it but I've always refused. There is a sense of accomplishment every time I look at it. It shows me where I started and how far I've come. I love being able to look back and see all of the progression I've made.
