Get to Know... Ann Everett

04 . 10 . 2017

Raised in Ireland and now based in Chicago, Ann Everett designs fashion forward women's apparel that is fun, functional and "freeing".

One of a Kind: Tell us about your work.

Ann:  My clothes are always functional--a bag has to feel right in your hand, pockets need to be in the right place on the outside of a garment.  It is crucial that my clothes are comfortable, easy and not super-fitted.  I want them to work for all women and all bodies.

One of a Kind:  How did you get started?

Ann:  I've always loved clothes but could never find what I wanted in stores.  Everything was too predictable, generic and stiff, not challenging or interesting.  I started building garments and working with fabrics to make clothing that conveyed a true sense of self.

One of a Kind:  Who or what inspires your work?

Ann:  I am inspired by fabrics and skins, especially shearling.  I love draping and contrasting textures. African artifacts and tribal art--I have a good friend who is an African arts dealer who constantly inspires me.  And the work of local artisans--beaders, embroiderers, felters and leatherworkers.

One of a Kind:  What will you be bringing to the Spring show?

Ann:  With my Spring collection, I'm exploring a more feminine aesthetic that still looks good with the harder edged stuff I've made in the past.  I'm using more color, beautiful cottons and linens, experimental fabrication techniques, and new silhouettes.  I'm so excited to show my new one of a kind pieces!

One of a Kind:  We're all ready for Spring in Chicago.  What do you love most about Spring?

Ann:  The smell of fresh cut grass!

One of a Kind:  What's your favorite flower?

Ann:  An orchid.

One of a Kind:  Cubs, White Sox or other?

Ann:  Irish Rugby!
